The REC has warned that the first signs of recovery in the jobs market could be jeopardised by a heavy-handed implementation of new EU regulations that could restrict the flexibility of the UK labour market.

The number of people out of work in the UK has increased to 2.47 million, a rise of 210,000 in the three months to July according to the Office of National Statistics' figures published today.

In a speech to the TUC Conference in Liverpool today, Gordon Brown has indicated that the Agency Workers Directive will be included in the new legislative programme for the next parliamentary session. This means that the Directive cannot be implemented in April 2010.
